World Book Day:
A Magical Celebration of Reading at Bitterne Park Primary and Nursery School
There was a real buzz of excitement at Bitterne Park Primary and Nursery School as children and staff came together to celebrate their love of books in a fantastic whole-school reading celebration.
Throughout the day, the school was filled with stories, imagination and creativity. One of the highlights was children sharing their favourite books with different classes. It was wonderful to see older and younger children coming together, recommending stories, reading aloud and discovering new characters and adventures. Moments like these truly showed how powerful reading can be in bringing people together.
Our brilliant Reading Ambassadors also took centre stage. They worked incredibly hard to plan, create and deliver an engaging assembly for the whole school. The assembly was packed with enthusiasm and included fun quizzes that tested everyone’s book knowledge. The children did an amazing job leading the event and inspiring others to pick up a new book.
Of course one of the most exciting parts of the celebration was dress-up day. Children arrived at school dressed as their favourite book characters and the costumes were incredible. From classic fairy tale heroes to modern storybook favourites, the school was transformed into a wonderful world of stories. The creativity and effort from children and families made the day truly special and it was fantastic to see so many beloved characters brought to life.
In classrooms, children also spent time exploring a wide range of books and sharing stories together. Teachers created inviting reading spaces and planned activities that encouraged curiosity and discussion about different texts and authors.
Adding even more excitement to the day was the classroom door decorating competition. Teachers transformed their doors into imaginative book-themed displays that filled the corridors with colour and creativity. After much admiration and discussion from the Reading Ambassadors, the results were announced:
1S took first place with their fantastic design of the Lion from The Wizard of Oz
Nursery and Blue Base shared second place with a range of storybook characters created by our Nursery children and Superworm moving up and down the well being a focus on the Blue Base door
3B came in third place with Paddington Bear and his jar of marmalade
The competition brought smiles to everyone who walked through the school and showed just how much creativity our community has. These doors are still up and being admired!
The week was a wonderful reminder of the joy that reading can bring. It was inspiring to see children sharing stories, celebrating books and encouraging each other to read.
We are incredibly proud of our Reading Ambassadors, our creative teachers and all the children who made the celebration so memorable. Events like this help nurture a lifelong love of reading and we cannot wait for our next book-filled adventure.
