Year 2 blog:
Year 2 had an absolutely wonderful and memorable day during their recent visit to the zoo. The sun was shining, the animals were lively and the children were full of excitement from the moment they arrived. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to explore, observe and learn in a real-life setting and it has already provided a wealth of inspiration for their upcoming writing unit.
Throughout the day, the children carefully observed a wide variety of animals, paying close attention to what they looked like and how they behaved. They discussed their ideas enthusiastically, describing movements, colours and habitats, which will support them as they begin writing recounts of their experience. It was lovely to see their curiosity and confidence grow as they shared their thoughts with one another.
There were certainly some clear favourites among the animals. The sloth captured everyone’s attention with its slow and gentle movements, while the penguins delighted the children as they waddled and swam playfully. The majestic snow leopard impressed the group who were lucky enough to see it and the baby rhino was a definite highlight, with many children describing it as “adorable” and “the cutest animal ever!”
One of the most exciting parts of the day was the Marwell Explorer experience, where the children became mini adventurers. They took part in an expedition around the zoo, learning how to track animals and identify whether they were predators or prey. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, observation skills and a deeper understanding of the animal world.
The children also discovered some fascinating facts along the way. They were amazed to learn that giraffes have the same number of neck bones as humans—just seven! In addition, they had great fun learning about collective nouns for animals, such as a “crash” of rhinos and a “flamboyance” of flamingos. These fun and memorable facts are sure to appear in their writing.
Overall, the trip was a huge success. The children returned to school full of enthusiasm and ideas and they are incredibly excited to begin writing about their fantastic day. We are looking forward to reading their recounts and seeing how they bring their experiences to life on paper.
