A Slice of Something New: Hommity Pie
This term we introduced Hommity Pie to the menu — a brand-new option and a bit of a mystery for many of our pupils. As with any new dish, uptake was initially low. On its very first day, 2 children from 2L braved to try it as their lunch option. New names and unfamiliar flavours can be daunting, especially when favourite standbys and our lunch boxes are familiar to us.
So, we decided to try something different.
Taste First, Decide Later
We ran Hommity Pie tasters in 3L, and the reaction was… well, pretty fantastic. The children were genuinely surprised by how delicious it was. Their verdict?
“It tastes like cheesy potato with a crispy cheese top!”
Suddenly, the pie that no one ordered became the pie everyone was talking about in 3L. Pupils immediately asked when it would be back on the menu, and even requested reminders so they’d know to be on dinners instead of sandwiches — or to choose yellow dinner rather than blue or purple on ordering days.
Fast Forward to This Week…
Hommity Pie appeared on the menu again this week, and we were completely taken aback by the response. Eleven pupils in 3L ordered the pie, some of these normally sandwiches every day — a huge jump from zero!
Mr Howlett in Year 6 is a well-known fan of the blue option (chicken and bacon pie) — his absolute favourite. But curiosity got the better of him this week, and he decided to try the Hommity Pie. After sampling both, he made a bold declaration:..He’s switching to Hommity Pie!
It’s been a joy to see 3L excitedly collecting their lunch this week, proudly choosing a dish they helped discover. Hommity Pie may be new, but it’s already proving that sometimes all it takes is one bite to win people over.
3L school councillors will share their findings and thoughts at the next school council whilst also asking:
Is there anything on the menu that we all feel we do not know much about or would like to taste?
What are our favourite meals on the menu and is there a favourite on each day?
If you haven’t tried it yet — consider this... that a little tasting can go a long, long way!
