Year 5 blog:

DT

In DT, Year 5 have been putting the finishing touches of their cam toy mechanisms together. Having constructed their cube, they were challenged to design the toy element, design a background and implement their chosen cam inside the cube. Having done this, they were finally ready to evaluate and reflect on the successes of their designs and wishes for i

Writing

This half-term, Year 5 will be exploring the world of Alex Rider and spies! Our initial piece of writing will be focused all around a gadget, designed by the children to be used in combat against enemies, self-defence or to escape capture. The children have so far enjoyed analysing and investigating existing gadgets and using these to begin formulating their own ideas. Moving on towards the latter stages of the half-term, we will turn our attention to the villains of the spy world and begin crafting an exciting and dramatic narrative .

Geography

In Year 5, the children have been learning about different types of maps (such as physical, political and thematic maps) and what each one is used for. Physical maps show landscapes like mountains and rivers, while political maps highlight countries and cities. Thematic maps focus on specific topics like population or climate. We will also be exploring map symbols and keys, helping us to decode information quickly and accurately. Through fun activities like treasure hunts and map-making, the children will be developing important geography skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them - one symbol at a time!
