Year 1 blog:
Writing
Year 1 have really enjoyed our new writing topic on ‘Norman, the slug with the silly shell’ by Sue Hendra. We started the unit by reading the story together and creating a story map. We thought about different objects Norman could use for a shell and generated adjectives to describe them. We then planned our own versions of the story before writing them. We have written some fantastic versions of the story.
Maths
At the beginning of this half term, Year 1 focussed on looking at Place Value within 50. We used lots of different resources including dienes, counters and multilink to represent these numbers. We talked lots about how many tens and how many ones are in a number. We also looked at finding one more and one less of numbers to 50. We have just started our new topic on length and height.
Reading
Year 1 love ‘Connecting with Literature’ on Fridays! Once a fortnight, we have a Connecting with Literature lesson where we listen to a new story and answer questions focussed on the story. Recently, we listened to “Tatty Ratty” written by Helen Cooper. We are looking forward to listening to and discussing more stories this half term.
History
This half term, Year 1 have been learning about a significant individual in our history lessons, Grace Darling. We used our inference skills to try and guess what she did that was important. We learnt that in 1838 Grace had noticed a ship that had been wrecked in a storm. She bravely decided to help her father try and rescue the survivors. While risking their own lives, Grace and her father managed to rescue 9 people. We look forward to learning more about Grace Darling as this half term continues.
Religious Education
In Religious Education, we have begun our unit on the Easter Story, linking with the emotions of happiness and sadness. We have looked at what happy and sad means to us and discussed how we might show these emotions. We then considered if we would feel happy or sad in certain situations - we found that not everyone felt the same way!
Art
We have started our new Art topic for this half term: printing. We have really enjoyed investigating how we can use different objects to print and create repeating patterns. We cannot wait to create our final piece later this half term.
