Year 1 Blog

Year 1 had such an amazing half term and we can’t believe how much we have learnt already this year! Here are some of the amazing things we have been doing since our last blog post.

There have been reports of a remarkable, orange slug flying overhead in a pair of pants! Can you believe it? After writing our Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell story, we have been focusing on writing a newspaper report about Norman’s flying adventure. To understand what a news report was, we watched a video to get some ideas and thought about what the words ‘normal’ and ‘remarkable’ meant. We looked at different synonyms for the words ‘usual’ and ‘unusual’ to build our vocabulary to use in our writing.

Brilliant Bird Feeders

As well as the rest of the school, Year 1 have put their 'Eco hats' on and have been making fantastic bird feeders at home! When we brought our bird feeders into school, we filled them up with bird feed and thought about where would be best to hang them outside. We are so excited to see the wildlife flutter into our school grounds!

Marvellous Mechanisms

We have been really enjoying our DT topic on working mechanisms this term. We explored and made a wheel mechanism, a pop up and a lever mechanism. Before we made our final piece, we planned what we wanted to make, who we wanted to make it for and what materials we would use. Our final pieces were phenomenal and we had so much fun making them!

What is next?

We are so excited to create our own superheroes in our writing topic, based on one of our favourite books, Supertato.  We are so proud of the learning we have done so far and can’t wait to discover even more next half term!
