Year 5

Mathematical Measuring Madness

This week, Year 5 have been exploring different methods and resources used for measuring. They’ve weighed, poured, estimated, compared, calculated and tested a range of measurement types. It has been interesting to understand the meaning of key vocabulary including kilo and centi, and how we can use this when converting between different units.

In our lessons, we have investigated the concept of measurement, which has involved forming a strong real life awareness of the weight, length and capacity of different items.

Here are some photographs of what we have done.  Estimation has also been essential this week.

Do you think an apple’s weight is closest to 2g, 200g or 2000g? Year 5 could tell you an accurate answer!

Next week, we are excited to apply this knowledge when exploring measurement as a more abstract approach.
